Sarah’s Blog
Hi, I’m Sarah. I absolved the preperatory course ‘Filmscoring and Production’ at Musicube Academy and now I am a second year student of Composition for Film and Theatre. In this blog I’m gonna share my personal experience as a student at ArtEZ in Arnhem.

The coming weeks are Try-out Study Days!!! Here, interested parties have the opportunity to take a look at the degree programme from the front row. You can join the classes and experience what it means to study at ArtEZ.
I still remember my Try-Out Study Days very well. Back then, I spent three days in Arnhem with two Musicube colleagues and looked at different subjects. The university provided a map with all the subjects and you could spontaneously decide what you wanted to see.
I especially remember the subject Harmony at the Piano. The teacher who teaches it mainly in our area is called Reinhard Siegert and is one of those people who never stop smiling. These lessons take place individually and each student has 20min per week for the first two years.
Here you learn and practise music theory practically on the piano through various exercises, some of which are adapted to students. At that time I had the opportunity to observe several lessons with different levels (1st year and 4th year).
I found it very impressive what you can learn in 4 years, although of course I didn’t know what level the individual students started at.
I also remember the theory lessons with Jean-Marc. He began each of his lessons with a round of aural skill training, in which we were even allowed to participate immediately, regardless of which year he was teaching. At first I was a bit overwhelmed and intimidated by the level of the other students, but in the end I was quite amazed at how well I managed to participate.
We also attended subjects like Orchestration and Music History. Both of them, I have to admit, seemed rather dry to me because they are the subjects that are quite theoretical and difficult to teach practically. But they are essential for our industry so it makes definitely sense to learn them.
It was also particularly exciting to get to know the students from the different years. We were able to hear stories and experiences first-hand and, above all, ask questions.
Everyone gave us a very friendly welcome and I was particularly surprised by the atmosphere at the university. After being used to the personal and relaxed atmosphere at the Musicube, I had imagined that things would be a bit more serious at the university. But on the contrary, here too I always had the feeling that I was on an equal footing with lecturers and students.
If you are thinking about studying in Arnhem, I would really recommend you to take advantage of the Try-out Study Days! Take a look at individual courses and get to know some students and teachers. Even if it’s only for one day, you can experience a real university life 🙂
All the best,
Sarah
