Hi, I’m Sarah. I absolved the preperatory course ‘Filmscoring and Production’ at Musicube Academy and now I am a second year student of Composition for Film and Theatre. In this blog I’m gonna share my personal experience as a student at ArtEZ in Arnhem.

This week, once again, an interdisciplinary project was on the agenda (for first year students only). I remember well my experience in this project called ‘Pleasure Island‘ when I was a first year.
In the project, people from different disciplines form groups (fine art, dancers, music theater, musicians, composers, creative writing, etc.). The nice thing is that you don’t necessarily have to work in your own discipline, you have the choice of how you want to participate in the project.
This year, the presentation of the works took place in an old eyewear factory. The building itself had a very special atmosphere and it was nice to see how the participants filled and designed the space. Since I was not involved in the project this year, I was able to view the artworks with fresh senses.
Among them were installations and also performances. Many of the works made me think and had a clear message, while in others the core idea was somewhat hidden. All of the projects had a guiding theme: ‘Serendipity‘. However, even the reference to this was not always obvious and sometimes it was more of an impulse for creativity.
My personal favorite was already the first performance titled ‘Things I wish I had said‘. The walls were artfully designed with phrases from different people. They were all things they wished they had said but were afraid to say. The darkness in the room sharpened my senses and made the experience even more intense. The group had painted themselves with neon colors and were singing in harmonies to the accompaniment of a guitar and keyboard.
Slowly, some of the group moved toward us and came quite close. For some of us this was very uncomfortable, but exactly this was again an impulse to think about. How, where and when might I get too close to someone who doesn’t want me to and I might not even notice?
‘Pleasure Island‘ is not just about letting your creativity run wild, but also about socializing. It’s the point where you can meet people you might want to do a project with in the future.
It’s also a way to learn to work in a team and maybe find out who you can work well with.
For me it is always nice to see people doing something with passion and dedication and in the end a wonderful piece of art comes out of it.
Unfortunately I wasn’t able to look at all the projects, but I’m definitely excited to see what the next ‘Pleasure Island‘ project may bring us.
All the best,
Sarah
